Bright Start to Gala Week of Bowls

by Rob McGuire on January 7, 2023

Morning cloud cover turned into brilliant sunshine in the afternoon as Bowls Tasmania’s State Bowls Championships commenced in Launceston today.

Tasmanian Trident player Taelyn Male from Burnie and his State player partner Bronwyn King from Penguin were in blistering form as were last year’s winners Wynyard’s Josh Waler-David and Kings Meadows Rae Simpson and both should feature well into the finals on Sunday and Monday.   Other big sectional play winners were Glenorchy Rodman’s Jack Ellis and Michelle Moate and Invermay’s Debbie and Chris Lee all of whom were undefeated.

With some very close games in the Mixed Open Pairs, section winners were Tim Norris and Janene Stubbs, Jack Ellis and Michelle Moate,  Allan and Carol Bannister, Cam Norris and Lyn Triffitt, Taelyn Male and Bronwyn King, Andrew Appleyard and Teresa Turmine, Sonia Martyn and Brad Carver, Chris and Debbie Lee, Shane and Judith Gurr, Grant Wakefield and Denise Middap, Mark Strochnetter and Kim Saunders, Josh Walker-Davis and Rae Simpson, Michael Sims and Zoe Whelan, Tim Douce and Courtney HobbS, David Minns and Alison Venn and Glenn Frame and Denise Tanner.

Current Bowling Arm Pairs Champions, Geoff Buchanan and Joe Reissig had to fight to the end to win their section with a nail-biting one-shot win over Michael Shingles and Doreen White who are unlucky to miss the finals. Other sectional winners in the Bowling Arm Pairs Championships were Lynne Hill and  Jeremy Bracken, Shaz Hyland and Gena Short and Heather Jones and Rodney O’Halloran.

In the Boys Junior Pairs, sectional winners were Dylan Samphier and Trey Daines, Jonty Hayes and Lachlan Thurley and Adam Taylor and Riley Davie.

Gala Week continues on Sunday with post-sectional play and quarter finals in the Open Mixed Pairs and finals in the Bowling Arm Pairs with all games being played at Trevallyn.  The Junior Boys Pairs finals are on Monday.

The second round of the Juniors State Wide Challenge involving junior representative teams from the North West Coats, Launceston and Hobart will be played at Longford on Sunday.

Bowls Tasmania will be live streaming the Bowling Arm Pairs Championship grand final on its Facebook page on Sunday afternoon.
