Top bowlers shine in Bowls Tasmania Singles Championships

Bright sunshine on the North-West Coast brought out the best in the State’s top bowlers who started their journey to try and win the prestigious Bowls Tasmania Men’s and Women’s Open and B Grade Singles Championships which got underway at Burnie, South Burnie, Penguin and Ulverstone today.

When the dust settled in the Men’s Open Singles Championships, just Grant Wakefield, Samuel Larsen, Lachie Thurley, Mark Nitz, Tim Douce, Taelyn Male, reigning State and Australian champion Rob McMullen and Josh Tyrrell remain in the hunt for the title.   In the round of 16, Wakefield defeated Brad Carver 25-18,, Larsen beat Chris Lee 25-11, Thurley accounted for Cam Norris 25-15, Nitz defeated Josh Appleyard 25-18, Douce beat Jarryd Brown 25-15, Male was too good for Sam Springer winning 25-10, McMullen defeated Clinton Seabourne 25-16 and Tyrrell narrowly beat Mark Harris 25-22.

In the Women’s Open Singles Championship the final eight consists of Lauren Banks, Rae Simpson, Jess McMullen, Jean Claridge, Kim Saunders, Mikayla Baker, Glenda Fielding and Annie Hannon,   In the round of 16, Banks was too good for Zoe Whelan winning 25-8, Simpson had a good win over Janet McCarthy 25-9, McMullen defeated Kirsten Viney 25-17, Claridge beat Carol Bannister 25-11, Saunders claimed the prize scalp of current Tasmanian singles champion Lyn Triffitt 25-19, Baker had a good win over Denise Tanner 25-4, Fielding defeated Vicki Gaffney 25-19 and Hannon beat Rose’anne Howard 25-14.

In the Men’s B Grade Singles Championships, Bill Mottershead, Brad Johns, Bruce Moran, Shane Davis, Mark Quinane, Michael Gallen, Darren McKenzie and David Williams have made it to the quarterfinals.

The Women’s B Grade Singles Championships has reached the semi-finals where Patricia Howard will play Karen Butler and Shaz Hyland is up against Danielle Lovett.

In the Disability Singles Championships, sectional winners were James Amos, Jacob Sheerin-Wall and Jamie Costello who will meet in the finals on Friday.

Sectional play in the Bowling Arm Fours Championships continued today.   After four rounds, Michael Shingles, Heather Jones, Colin Shipton and Doreen White remain undefeated  with Geoff Buchanan, Joe Reissig, Ray Dureau and Vaughan Eaves in second place with one loss.   The final round will be played on Friday.

The championships continue tomorrow with knock-out quarter and semi-finals in the Men’s and Women’s Open and B Grade Singles Championships and sectional play in the Bowling Arm Triples Championships.  

The championships conclude on Friday at Burnie with grand finals in the Open Men’s and Women’s Pairs and Singles, B Grade Men’s and Women’s Singles, Disability Singles and Pairs and Bowling Arm Triples and Fours Championships.
